Homeland security involves a variety of activities including intelligence gathering and analysis; planning preparedness and emergency response; guarding against natural or man-made threats; securing the nation’s borders; and protecting life, property, and critical infrastructure. Geospatial Information Systems provide the capability for timely, accurate information that is easily accessible and shared. It provides an integration platform for improved decision making and response capability for the homeland security mission. Today, GIS is used throughout federal, state, and local governments for a number of homeland security requirements.

The Postbaccalaureate Certificate in Geospatial Intelligence is designed to improve your skills in geospatial technology, spatial thinking, and information literacy. You can learn to combine those skills with knowledge of cultural and political geography to solve problems that your employer considers critical. You can do all this according to your own schedule, studying where and when it's most convenient for you.

The postbaccalaureate certificate in geospatial intelligence is a 14-credit program made up of five online courses. Our curriculum is designed so that all 14 credits earned in this certificate program count toward Penn State's online master of geographic information systems degree, should a student be accepted into the master's program.
